The galvanometer's principle: a current loop in a magnetic field experiences a deflecting torque proportional to the current, which is balanced by a restoring torque from a spring, so the steady deflection measures the current.

A moving coil galvanometer consists of a rectangular coil of many turns, wound on a light aluminium frame, suspended (or pivoted) between the poles of a strong permanent magnet with concave pole pieces and a soft-iron cylindrical core, so that the magnetic field is radial - i.e., always parallel to the plane of the coil at every position of the coil.

When a current I flows through the coil (having N turns, each of area A) placed in this magnetic field B, each turn experiences a torque due to the forces on its current-carrying sides. Because the field is radial, the plane of the coil is always along B, so the deflecting torque is:

τ_deflecting = N I A B
