The Doppler effect in light is the change in observed wavelength/frequency due to relative source-observer motion; receding gives red shift (longer wavelength), approaching gives blue shift (shorter wavelength).

Doppler effect in light: When there is relative motion between a source of light and an observer, the frequency (and hence wavelength) of the light received appears to change. This is the optical Doppler effect.

For speeds v much smaller than the speed of light c, the fractional change in wavelength is

(delta lambda) / lambda = v_radial / c,

where v_radial is the component of relative velocity along the line joining source and observer (positive when they recede).

Red shift: When the source and observer move AWAY from each other, the observed wavelength increases (frequency decreases). Since the shift is towards the longer-wavelength (red) end of the spectrum, it is called a red shift. Light from distant galaxies shows red shift, indicating the universe is expanding.
