Poultry Farming and Avian Flu

Poultry farming is organised around two distinct purposes, each with its own management focus. Layers are hens bred and managed specifically for sustained egg production over a long laying life, so their management emphasises steady nutrition and conditions that keep egg output high over many months. Broilers, by contrast, are chicks raised specifically for meat, and their management is built around achieving rapid weight gain to a marketable size within a short period, rather than long-term productivity.

Whichever the purpose, good poultry management rests on the same three components: careful selection of breed suited to the layer or broiler purpose intended; feeding, providing a properly balanced ration matched to the birds' stage of growth or laying cycle; and health and hygiene, covering appropriate housing, sanitation, and disease prevention including vaccination — together determining how productive and profitable the poultry unit is. …
