In double circulation blood runs through the heart twice — once via the lungs, once via the body — so oxygenated and deoxygenated blood never mix.

In humans blood does not wander randomly; it follows a fixed route, and that route is arranged as a double circulation. The name captures the essential fact: in one complete trip around the body, blood passes through the heart not once but twice. This is possible because the heart is fully partitioned into two atria and two ventricles, so that the two streams of blood can be handled side by side without ever running together.

The system is built from two loops. In the pulmonary circulation, the right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary artery, which carries it to the lungs. There the blood picks up oxygen, and the oxygenated blood is returned by the pulmonary veins to the left atrium. This is the shorter loop, between the heart and the lungs.

In the systemic circulation, the left ventricle pumps the now-oxygenated blood into the aorta, from where arteries, arterioles and capillaries distribute it to all the tissues of the body. The tissues take up the oxygen and nutrients and give up carbon dioxide, and the deoxygenated blood is gathered by venules, veins and the vena cava, and emptied into the right atrium — ready to begin the pulmonary loop again. …
