Major disorders of the human respiratory system include asthma, emphysema and occupational respiratory disorders such as silicosis.

1. Asthma:

A disorder in which the muscles of the bronchi and bronchioles undergo difficulty in breathing due to inflammation and narrowing (constriction) of the bronchioles, often triggered by allergens, dust, smoke or cold air. It causes wheezing and shortness of breath.

2. Emphysema:

A chronic disorder in which the walls of the alveoli are damaged and lose their elasticity due to the destruction of alveolar walls, leading to a decrease in the total respiratory (alveolar) surface area for gas exchange. It is mainly caused by long-term cigarette smoking, which damages the alveolar walls, reducing efficiency of breathing and causing breathlessness.

3. Occupational respiratory disorders:

In industries where workers are chronically exposed to dust (e.g., stone-grinding, mining, textile industries), long-term exposure of the lungs to fine dust particles can cause inflammation leading to fibrosis (proliferation of fibrous tissue) and thereby damage the lungs. Examples include:

  • Silicosis - caused by inhalation of silica dust, common in mining and stone-cutting workers. …
