Chyme is the acidic, semi-digested, pulpy food mass produced in the stomach by the action of gastric juice, and passed on to the small intestine.

When food (bolus) enters the stomach, the muscular walls churn it while the gastric glands secrete gastric juice containing hydrochloric acid, the enzyme pepsin (which begins protein digestion), and mucus.

The mechanical churning plus chemical action converts the food into a thin, acidic, soup-like semi-digested paste.
