Homologous organs share a common evolutionary origin/structure but can differ in function (divergent evolution); analogous organs share the same function but arise from different structures/origins (convergent evolution).

Homologous organs:

  • Definition: Organs which have the same basic (fundamental) structure and developmental/evolutionary origin, but may be modified to perform different functions in different organisms.
  • Example: The forelimbs of vertebrates - the flipper of a whale, the wing of a bat, the leg of a horse, and the arm of a human all have the same basic pentadactyl limb bone arrangement (humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, etc.), inherited from a common ancestor, but each is adapted for a different function (swimming, flying, running, grasping respectively).
  • Significance: Homology is evidence of divergent evolution - different species evolving from a common ancestral form, with the structure being modified over time to suit different functional needs (adaptive radiation).

Analogous organs:

  • Definition: Organs which have different basic structures and different developmental/evolutionary origins, but perform the same function due to similar selective/environmental pressures.
  • Example: The wings of a butterfly (insect, formed from cuticle) and the wings of a bird (formed from bone, feathers, and skin) - both are used for the same function (flying) but have completely different structural origins. Other examples: eyes of an octopus and a human; flippers of a dolphin (mammal) and a shark (fish, formed differently). …
