During intense muscular activity, when the oxygen supply cannot keep pace with the demand for ATP, muscle fibres switch to anaerobic glycolysis — breaking down glycogen/glucose to pyruvate and then, in the absence of enough oxygen, reducing the pyruvate to lactic acid, which yields ATP quickly but is linked to muscle fatigue. This lactic acid diffuses out of the muscle into the blood and is carried to the liver, where it is re-oxidised to pyruvate and resynthesised into glucose by gluconeogenesis; this glucose can then be released back into the blood and taken up again by the muscle to replenish its glycogen.
