The retina is the eye's innermost light-sensitive layer; it holds rod and cone photoreceptors, has a fovea (sharpest vision) and a blind spot, and converts light into nerve impulses carried by the optic nerve.

The eyeball wall has three coats; the innermost is the retina (Neural Control and Coordination — sense organs, NCERT Class 12 Biology). An account of it:

Structure: The retina lines the inner surface of the eyeball behind the vitreous chamber. From inside outward it has three main cell layers — the ganglion cells, the bipolar cells, and the photoreceptor cells — resting on a pigmented layer.

Photoreceptors:

  • Rods — contain the pigment rhodopsin (visual purple); very sensitive to low light, they give twilight (scotopic), black-and-white vision.
  • Cones — contain the pigment iodopsin/photopsin; work in bright light and give colour vision and sharp detail. Three cone types respond to blue, green and red light.

Special regions:

  • Macula lutea (yellow spot) with a central pit, the fovea centralis — packed only with cones; here vision is sharpest. …
