1. Forebrain:
- Cerebrum: The largest part of the brain, divided into two cerebral hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum, with an outer folded layer, the cerebral cortex (grey matter). It controls voluntary movements, higher mental functions (thinking, reasoning, memory, learning), and interprets sensory information (touch, vision, hearing, etc.), organised into specific functional areas (motor, sensory, association areas).
- Thalamus: A major coordinating and relay centre for sensory (and some motor) information passing between the spinal cord/mid-brain and the cerebrum.
- Hypothalamus: Lies below the thalamus; controls body temperature, hunger and thirst, and regulates the pituitary gland's secretion of hormones; contains centres for many emotional responses (pleasure, rage, etc.).
2. Midbrain: A small region between the forebrain and hindbrain; it contains centres controlling certain visual and auditory reflexes (e.g. corpora quadrigemina), and relays impulses between different brain regions.
3. Hindbrain:
- Cerebellum: Located behind the medulla and pons; responsible for maintaining posture, balance, and the coordination of voluntary muscular movements.
- Pons: Connects different parts of the brain (e.g. medulla with the cerebrum/cerebellum) and helps regulate some respiratory functions. …
