Amniocentesis is a prenatal test analysing amniotic-fluid cells to detect chromosomal/genetic disorders (e.g. Down's syndrome, haemophilia); its misuse for sex determination is banned.

Amniocentesis is a foetal (prenatal) diagnostic technique. In this procedure, a small amount of the amniotic fluid (the fluid that surrounds and protects the developing foetus inside the amniotic sac) is withdrawn using a needle. This fluid contains cells shed by the foetus.

By studying the chromosomes (karyotype) and biochemistry of these foetal cells, doctors can detect:

  • Chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down's syndrome (trisomy of chromosome 21).
  • Genetic/metabolic disorders, such as haemophilia, sickle-cell anaemia and others.
