Errors of commission are clerical mistakes — wrong amounts, wrong postings, wrong casting, or posting to a wrong same-class account. Two examples: a wrong amount posted to a debtor (a one-sided error rectified through the Suspense Account) and a posting to the wrong personal account (a two-sided error rectified by a direct journal entry).

Meaning and treatment

Errors of commission occur through carelessness of staff — the account and principle are right but the amount or the posting is wrong. Some such errors are one-sided (affect the trial balance) and are rectified through the Suspense Account; others are two-sided and are rectified by an ordinary journal entry.

Example 1 — Wrong amount, one-sided error

Goods sold to Ram ₹5,000 were posted to his account as ₹500, so his account is short by ₹4,500. As only one account is wrong, the trial balance does not tally and the correction is routed through the Suspense Account.

(Sale to Ram ₹5,000 posted as ₹500, shortfall now made good)

Example 2 — Wrong account, two-sided error

Cash paid to Mohan ₹1,000 was posted to Sohan’s account. Sohan’s account is wrongly debited and Mohan’s account is left out; both totals stay equal, so no Suspense Account is needed.
