A random number table is a pre-prepared table of digits with no pattern. To pick 3 of 10 students, assign each student a number, then read numbers from the table and select the matching students, skipping repeats and out-of-range numbers, until 3 are chosen.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Number the students from 0 to 9 (ten students, single digits) — or use 01–10 if you prefer two-digit numbers.
  2. Choose a random starting point in the random number table (e.g. close your eyes and point).
  3. Read the digits in a fixed direction (say, along a row or down a column), one at a time.
  4. Select the student whose number matches each digit read.
  5. Ignore any digit that (a) repeats a student already chosen, or (b) falls outside the 0–9 range (if using two-digit numbers, ignore 11–00).
  6. Continue until 3 different students have been selected. These 3 form the random sample.
