Files serve a different purpose: persistence. RAM is wiped when the program ends, so data you want to keep, reuse, share, or process in bulk is stored in files (or, at larger scale, databases).
Processing without a file — perfectly normal
This program computes a mean with no file anywhere in sight:
import statistics
heights = [90, 102, 110, 115, 85, 90, 100, 110, 110] # data lives in memory
print(statistics.mean(heights))
101.33333333333333
The list heights exists only in RAM while the program runs. Input can equally come from input(), a sensor, or an internet connection — processed on the fly, never touching the disk.
So why do files exist at all?
| Need | Why memory alone fails |
|---|---|
| Persistence | RAM is volatile — close the program (or lose power) and in-memory data vanishes. A file on disk survives. |
| Reuse | Tomorrow's run of the program can open() yesterday's file instead of re-entering the data. |
| Sharing | A CSV file can be mailed to a friend or opened by a different program; a Python list cannot leave the process. |
| Volume | Datasets bigger than available RAM must sit on disk and be read piece by piece. |
| Record-keeping | Organisations must retain data (results, accounts, rolls) long after any single program run. |
