Divide waist by hip circumference to get WHR; risk cut-offs are 0.90+ (men) and 0.85+ (women).

WHR = waist circumference / hip circumference (unitless)

Calculation procedure:

  1. Measure the waist at its narrowest point (roughly the level of the navel) with the subject standing relaxed and breathing normally.
  2. Measure the hip at the widest point of the buttocks, in the same unit (e.g. cm).
  3. Divide the waist measurement by the hip measurement; since both are in the same unit, the ratio has no unit.

Example: waist 80 cm, hip 100 cm → 80/100 = 0.80. …
