Astanga Yoga is Patanjali's eightfold path — Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi — moving step by step from ethical conduct to complete absorption.

  3. Asana — steady, comfortable posture that keeps the body firm, healthy and still.
  4. Pranayama — control and regulation of the breath (Puraka, Kumbhaka, Rechaka) to steady the mind and increase vitality.
  5. Pratyahara — withdrawal of the senses from external objects, turning awareness inward; the turning point of the path.
  6. Dharana — concentration: fixing the mind steadily on a single point or object.
  7. Dhyana — meditation: an unbroken, continuous flow of concentration on that object.
  8. Samadhi — complete absorption, where the meditator merges with the object of meditation and reaches inner stillness and self-realisation. …
