Arthropods dominate the animal kingdom because a suite of features — a tough exoskeleton, jointed appendages, a divided body, varied breathing and sharp sense organs — makes them exceptionally adaptable.

Arthropoda is the largest phylum in the animal kingdom and includes the insects. More than two-thirds of all the named species on earth are arthropods, which makes this the most successful group of animals. The reasons for that success lie in the very features that define the phylum.

  • Chitinous exoskeleton. The body is covered by a hard outer covering made of chitin. This exoskeleton protects the animal, supports its body, and helps guard against water loss — a real advantage in a wide range of environments.
  • Jointed appendages. A key feature is the presence of jointed appendages; indeed the name comes from words meaning joint and appendages. Jointed limbs allow efficient, varied movement and let the animal manipulate its surroundings.
  • Divided body. The body is organised into three regions — a head, a thorax and an abdomen — allowing different parts to take on different tasks.
  • Varied respiration. Breathing is carried out by gills, book gills, book lungs or a tracheal system, depending on the group. Because different arthropods breathe in different ways, the phylum can exploit aquatic, terrestrial and aerial habitats.
  • Well-developed sense organs. Sense organs are highly developed and include antennae, both compound and simple eyes, and balancing organs called statocysts, so arthropods sense and respond to their environment keenly. …
