The complement Eˉ\bar{E} collects every element of the universal set SS that is not in EE. For S={1,2,3,4,5,6}S=\{1,2,3,4,5,6\} and E={1,3,5}E=\{1,3,5\}, this gives Eˉ={2,4,6}\bar{E}=\{2,4,6\}.

What the complement means

When we fix a universal set SS, the complement of a subset EE, written Eˉ\bar{E} (or EcE^{c}), is the set of all elements of SS that do not belong to EE:

Eˉ={x:x∈S and x∉E}=S∖E\bar{E}=\{x : x\in S \text{ and } x\notin E\}=S\setminus E

Applying it here

We are given

S={1,2,3,4,5,6},E={1,3,5}.S=\{1,2,3,4,5,6\},\qquad E=\{1,3,5\}.

Go through each element of SS and keep only those missing from EE: …
