Operating Ratio = 84% (Cost of Revenue from Operations + Operating Expenses, expressed as a percentage of Revenue from Operations).

Concept: Operating Ratio

Operating Ratio measures the relationship between operating costs and revenue. It tells us what proportion of every rupee of sales is consumed by the cost of goods sold and day-to-day operating expenses. A lower ratio indicates better operational efficiency because the firm retains more from each rupee of revenue to cover non-operating expenses, interest, tax, and profit.

The formula is:

Operating Ratio = (Cost of Revenue from Operations + Operating Expenses) / Revenue from Operations × 100

Why this treatment? Operating Ratio isolates operating performance. We include only those costs directly tied to running the business—cost of goods sold (Cost of Revenue from Operations) and operating expenses like selling, distribution, and administrative expenses. We exclude non-operating items (interest paid, interest received, loss/profit on sale of assets) because the ratio aims to evaluate how efficiently the core business converts sales into gross margin and manages its operating overheads.

Note

Operating Expenses typically include office expenses, selling expenses, distribution expenses, and administrative expenses. They do not include financial expenses (interest) or non-operating losses.

Solution

We apply the formula directly with the given figures.
