Q.Preeti celebrated her birthday with her family. She was excited to share the moments with her friend Himanshu. She uploaded selected images of her birthday party on a social networking site so that Himanshu can see them. After few days, Preeti had a fight with Himanshu. Next morning, she deleted her birthday photographs from that social networking site, so that Himanshu cannot access them. Later in the evening, to her surprise, she saw that one of the images which she had already deleted from the social networking site was available with their common friend Gayatri. She hurriedly enquired Gayatri “Where did you get this picture from?”. Gayatri replied “Himanshu forwarded this image few minutes back”. Help Preeti to get answers for the following questions. Give justification for your answers so that Preeti can understand it clearly.

(a) How could Himanshu access an image which I had already deleted?
(b) Can anybody else also access these deleted images?
(c) Had these images not been deleted from my digital footprint?

Deleted data on social media is rarely truly gone — it persists on servers, in backups, and in other users' copies, forming a permanent digital footprint.

This question is about data retention and the persistence of digital footprints on social media platforms. The core idea is that "deleting" something online does not mean it is erased from every location or system.

(a) How could Himanshu access an image she had already deleted?

When Preeti uploaded the photo, the social networking site stored it on its servers. Even after she deleted it from her own profile, several things could have happened:

  • The platform may have kept the image in a backup or cache for a period before permanent deletion.
  • Himanshu might have downloaded or saved the image before Preeti deleted it.
  • The platform's content delivery network (CDN) might still have served the image from a cached copy.
  • The image could have been shared or forwarded by someone else who had access before deletion.

The most likely explanation is that Himanshu either saved the image locally when it was still available, or the platform's servers retained a copy that he could still access through a direct link or shared album.

Watch out

Many users mistakenly believe that deleting a post removes it from all recipients' devices and from the platform's servers immediately. In reality, social media platforms often retain deleted content for days or weeks in backups and caches.

(b) Can anybody else also access these deleted images?

Yes, potentially. Anyone who:

  • Had access to the image before deletion (friends tagged, followers, or anyone in the sharing audience)
  • Received a forwarded copy from someone else
  • Had the direct URL to the image (which might still work if the server hasn't purged it)
  • Was part of a group chat where the image was shared

Even after deletion, the image exists in multiple places: on friends' devices, in chat histories, in server backups, and possibly on third-party services that index social media content.

Important

Once you share digital content online, you lose control over it. The only way to prevent this is to never upload it in the first place.

(c) Had these images not been deleted from her digital footprint?

Correct. The images were not deleted from her digital footprint. A digital footprint includes:

  • Active footprint: data you intentionally share (posts, photos, comments)
  • Passive footprint: data collected without direct action (server logs, metadata, cookies) …
