Planning the tournament:
- Decide the objective (e.g., inter-house athletics meet), the sport(s), and the target participants (which classes/houses).
- Fix the date, duration and venue, checking the school's academic calendar first to avoid exam clashes.
- Prepare a budget (equipment, refreshments, prizes) and the list of committees needed — Technical, Logistics, Finance, Marketing (section 1.2).
- Draw the fixtures (knockout, league, or combination — section 1.3) based on how many houses/classes are entering and how much time is available.
- Brief staff, student volunteers and officials on their roles, and run the event, monitoring it as it happens (controlling) to catch and fix problems early.
Two problems you may encounter, and how to deal with them:
- Uneven number of participating teams/houses. If the number of houses/classes entering is not a power of two, some teams will need a bye.
