Q.Discuss the importance of Protein in regard to sportsperson.
Protein repairs and builds the muscle tissue that training breaks down — but the amount needed is a defined range, not unlimited.
During exercise and training, muscle bulk increases while muscle tissue also breaks down, and during prolonged exercise protein itself is oxidised to provide energy — both reasons sportspersons need MORE protein than non-athletes. ICMR (1985) recommends 12-14% of total caloric intake as protein, within a 1-2 g/kg body weight range (lower for endurance/light-weight-category sports, upper for strength sports). Eating sufficient calories from a well-balanced diet usually already provides adequate protein; good-quality, low-fat sources (skim milk, egg white, fish, chicken) and cereal-pulse combinations improve protein QUALITY without needing more quantity. Going beyond twice the recommended level (>2 g/kg) risks renal degeneration, bone porosity, dehydration and urinary calcium loss (a particular concern for women athletes).
Protein repairs and builds the muscle tissue broken down by training and supplies energy during prolonged exercise — sportspersons need 1-2 g/kg body weight (12-14% of calories), from good-quality sources, never pushed beyond 2 g/kg.
