The chapter's explicit Purpose for this test is 'To determine aerobic fitness.' Developed by Brouha in 1943 to measure fitness-for-work and recovery from work (originally validated on 2200 college-age men), the test requires only a 20-inch bench, a stopwatch and a metronome.
The procedure: the subject steps up and down the bench at a steady 30 steps per minute for 5 continuous minutes, or until they can no longer keep pace (exhaustion, test ends early). Immediately after stopping, the subject sits, and the tester counts their pulse between 1 and 1.5 minutes afterward — deliberately not immediately, to let the initial post-exercise surge settle slightly. …
