The Harvard Step Test is a classic field test for cardiorespiratory endurance. It works by placing a controlled, sub-maximal demand on the heart and lungs — stepping up and down at a fixed rate — then measuring how quickly the pulse recovers afterward. A fitter heart recovers faster, giving a higher Physical Fitness Index (PFI). The equipment is minimal because the test is designed to be administered almost anywhere, but each item has a precise purpose.
Equipment required:
- A sturdy bench or platform of the correct height: 20 inches (50.8 cm) for men, 16 inches (40.6 cm) for women. The bench must be stable and non-slip, as the subject will step onto it 150 times over five minutes.
- A stopwatch or timer accurate to seconds. You need it for two things: timing the full 5-minute exercise period (or the actual duration if the subject stops early), and timing the 30-second pulse count window that begins exactly 1 minute after exercise ends.
- A metronome set to 120 beats per minute. This gives the stepping cadence of 30 complete step cycles per minute (up-up-down-down counts as one cycle). Without it, the subject's pace will drift and the test loses standardisation.
- A pen and recording sheet to note the subject's name, the actual exercise duration (if less than 300 seconds), and the 30-second pulse count taken between 1 and 1.5 minutes post-exercise. …
