Biodiversity is conserved either where it naturally occurs (in-situ) or in controlled facilities away from its natural habitat (ex-situ); an endangered species is one whose numbers have declined so much that it is at serious risk of going extinct soon.

Two methods of biodiversity conservation:

  1. In-situ conservation: protecting and conserving species in their own natural habitat/ecosystem, e.g. establishing National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Biosphere Reserves, where whole communities of organisms along with their environment are protected together.
  2. Ex-situ conservation: conserving threatened/endangered species outside their natural habitat, under human care, e.g. in Zoological Parks, Botanical Gardens, Wildlife Safari Parks, and through techniques like seed banks, gene banks, tissue culture, and cryopreservation of gametes/embryos. …
