Adaptive radiation is the process by which a single ancestral species diversifies into many descendant species, each adapted to a different niche, within one geographical area.

When a group of organisms colonises a new, isolated geographical area (such as an island) with diverse available niches, natural selection favours divergence into multiple forms, each adapted to exploit a different resource/habitat. This process, occurring within one place (unlike convergent evolution occurring in different, isolated areas), is called adaptive radiation.
