Adaptive radiation is the evolutionary diversification of a single ancestral species into many descendant species, each specialised for a different way of life within the same broad region.

Adaptive radiation is the process of evolution of different species, all arising from the same ancestral stock, in a given/isolated geographical area, starting from a point and radiating to other areas of that geography, each species adapting to a different niche/food source/habitat available in the area. Because it occurs within one geographical area, it differs from convergent evolution (where unrelated species in different places evolve similar adaptations to similar habitats).
