DNA fingerprinting, developed by Alec Jeffreys, compares the unique repetitive-DNA ('VNTR') patterns of individuals - it is widely used in forensics and parentage testing.

DNA fingerprinting was introduced (developed) by Alec Jeffreys, in 1984, at the University of Leicester, England. It involves identifying differences in some specific regions of DNA sequence in an individual, called repetitive DNA (VNTRs, Variable Number of Tandem Repeats), because these sequences show a very high degree of polymorphism (variation) and are unique to each individual (except identical twins).
