Pleiotropy is the phenomenon in which a single gene influences/controls more than one phenotypic trait, i.e. the gene has multiple phenotypic expressions. A classic example is phenylketonuria (PKU) in humans: the single mutant gene responsible for this metabolic disorder (deficiency of the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase) causes a pleiotropic effect - it results in mental retardation as well as a reduction in hair and skin pigmentation, because the same underlying metabolic block affects multiple pathways in the body.
