IUDs are contraceptive devices placed in the uterus that mainly prevent fertilization/implantation; tubectomy is a permanent female sterilization method that blocks the fallopian tubes.

How an IUD works: Intra-Uterine Devices (IUDs, e.g. Lippes loop, CuT, Multiload, hormone-releasing IUDs like Progestasert/LNG-IUS) are inserted into the uterus by doctors or trained nurses. They increase phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus. Copper-releasing IUDs (Cu-T, Cu-7) release Cu ions that suppress sperm motility and their fertilising capacity. Hormone-releasing IUDs make the uterus unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to sperm (by altering cervical mucus). IUDs are widely used, reversible birth-control methods, especially suitable for spacing children.
