Fehling's solution is reduced by aliphatic aldehydes but NOT by aromatic aldehydes, so it cleanly distinguishes acetaldehyde from benzaldehyde.

Add Fehling's solution (a deep-blue alkaline solution of Cu2+ complexed with tartrate) to each compound and warm gently:

  • Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO): being an aliphatic aldehyde, it is readily oxidized and reduces Cu2+ to Cu+, giving a characteristic brick-red precipitate of cuprous oxide (Cu2O). Positive test.

  • Benzaldehyde (C6H5CHO): being an aromatic aldehyde, it does NOT reduce Fehling's solution - the blue colour persists, no precipitate forms. Negative test.
