A peptide bond links two amino acids via an amide linkage; denaturation is the disruption of a protein's higher-order folding without breaking its amino-acid sequence.

(a) Peptide bond. When two amino acids combine, the carboxyl (-COOH) group of one reacts with the amino (-NH2) group of the other, eliminating a molecule of water and forming an amide linkage, -CO-NH-. This -CO-NH- linkage joining amino acid residues together in a protein chain is called a peptide bond.
