Activation energy is the energy barrier that must be overcome for reactants to be converted to products; the Arrhenius equation quantifies how the rate constant depends exponentially on this barrier and on temperature.

Activation energy (Ea): Not all colliding molecules react - only those with sufficient kinetic energy, equal to or greater than a certain threshold value, can overcome the energy barrier between reactants and products (often visualized via an unstable, high-energy "activated complex" or transition state). The activation energy is defined as the MINIMUM extra energy (over and above the average energy of the reactant molecules) that the reacting molecules must acquire before they can undergo an effective collision leading to product formation.

Arrhenius equation:

k = A . e^(-Ea / RT)

where:

  • k = rate constant of the reaction
  • A = Arrhenius (pre-exponential/frequency) factor, related to the frequency of collisions with proper orientation
  • Ea = activation energy
  • R = universal gas constant …
