Lenz's law fixes the direction of induced current/emf: it always acts to oppose the very change in flux that caused it, which is really a statement of conservation of energy.

Lenz's law states: the induced emf (and hence induced current, if the circuit is closed) always opposes the change in magnetic flux linked with the circuit that produces it.

This is captured mathematically by the minus sign in Faraday's law: e = −N(dΦ/dt).
