Each region of the electromagnetic spectrum has a characteristic wavelength range and, because of the way it's produced and how it interacts with matter, distinct practical applications.

  1. Radio waves: Wavelength range roughly greater than 0.1 m (extending to hundreds/thousands of metres); frequency range roughly a few kHz up to about 10⁹ Hz. Produced by accelerating charges in conducting wires/antennas (oscillating LC circuits). Use: radio and television broadcasting, and general wireless communication.
  2. X-rays: Wavelength range roughly 10⁻¹³ m to 10⁻⁸ m (about 0.01 nm to 10 nm). Produced when high-energy electrons are suddenly stopped (decelerated) after striking a heavy metal target. Use: medical diagnosis — X-ray imaging is used to see bones and detect fractures inside the body (they penetrate soft tissue but are absorbed more by bone); also used to study crystal structures. …
