Q.(a) Arrange the following electromagnetic radiations in increasing order of their wavelength —

(i) Gamma rays,
(ii) Microwaves,
(iii) Ultraviolet rays.
(b) Why are infrared waves called heat waves?
(c) In vacuum, the amplitude of the magnetic field component of an electromagnetic wave is B0 = 510 nT. What is the amplitude of the electric field component of the wave? (1+1+1)

Wavelength increases in the order Gamma < UV < Microwaves; infrared is called 'heat waves' because it heats matter (especially water) strongly by absorption; and E0 = cB0 gives 153 N/C for B0 = 510 nT.

(a) In the electromagnetic spectrum, wavelength increases as: Gamma rays (~10⁻¹⁴–10⁻¹⁰ m, shortest) → Ultraviolet rays (~10⁻⁹–4×10⁻⁷ m) → Microwaves (~10⁻³–10⁻¹ m, longest of these three). So increasing order of wavelength: Gamma rays < Ultraviolet rays < Microwaves.

(b) Infrared radiation is readily absorbed by most materials — especially by water molecules and the vibrational/rotational modes of many molecular bonds present in living tissue, wood, etc. This absorbed energy increases the thermal agitation (kinetic energy) of the molecules, raising the material's temperature. Because of this strong heating effect on absorption, infrared waves are commonly called 'heat waves.'
