Q.(a) Draw a diagram showing the oscillating electric field and magnetic field of an electromagnetic wave propagating along the positive Z-axis.

(b) The electric field of an electromagnetic wave is E = 3×10^-5 sin(9×10^15 t - 3×10^7 x) Vm^-1. Write the equation of the associated magnetic field of this wave.

In an EM wave, E, B and the propagation direction are mutually perpendicular and oscillate in phase; the amplitude ratio E0/B0 always equals the speed of light c.

(a) For an EM wave travelling along +Z: draw the Z-axis as the direction of propagation, the electric field E oscillating sinusoidally along the X-axis (in the XZ plane), and the magnetic field B oscillating sinusoidally along the Y-axis (in the YZ plane) -- E, B and the direction of propagation are mutually perpendicular at every instant, and E and B reach their maxima and zeros together (they are in phase).

(b) Given E=3×10−5sin⁡(9×1015t−3×107x)E=3\times10^{-5}\sin(9\times10^{15}t-3\times10^{7}x) V/m -- this is a wave of the form E0sin⁡(ωt−kx)E_0\sin(\omega t-kx) travelling along +x.
