Forward bias fights and reduces the internal barrier so current flows easily; reverse bias reinforces the barrier and almost blocks current.

Forward bias: the p-side is connected to the positive terminal and the n-side to the negative terminal of the battery. This opposes the internal junction field, DEcreasing the potential barrier and NARROWING the depletion region, so majority carriers cross the junction easily -- a large forward current (order of mA) flows, and the junction offers low resistance.
