Forward biasing connects the battery so as to reduce the junction's potential barrier and allow easy current flow; reverse biasing connects it the opposite way, widening the barrier and blocking current (except a tiny leakage current).

(i) Forward biasing: The p-region of the diode is connected to the positive terminal of the external battery, and the n-region to the negative terminal. This applied voltage opposes the junction's built-in potential barrier, narrowing the depletion region. Majority carriers (holes in p, electrons in n) are pushed toward the junction and, once the barrier is sufficiently lowered (beyond the 'knee' voltage, ~0.7 V for Si), they cross over freely, giving a large forward current that increases rapidly with applied voltage.
