Since intensity from each slit is proportional to its width, a width ratio of 4:1 gives an amplitude ratio of 2:1, and squaring the sum/difference of amplitudes gives the intensity ratio 9:1.

For light passing through a slit, the intensity contributed is proportional to the slit's width: I ∝ width. So if the widths are in ratio 4:1,

I1/I2 = 4/1

Since intensity is proportional to the square of amplitude (I ∝ a²), the amplitude ratio is:

a1/a2 = √(I1/I2) = √4 = 2, i.e. a1 : a2 = 2 : 1
