desktop, single-user application with built-in visual designers (tables, queries, forms, reports),
while MySQL is a client–server, multi-user RDBMS built for large shared databases. They can even be
combined: Base can serve as a graphical front-end to a MySQL server.
Exploring LibreOffice Base. Base comes free with the LibreOffice suite (Windows/Linux/macOS). When you create a new database it makes a single .odb file and shows four panes — Tables, Queries, Forms, Reports:
- Tables — a Design View where you define columns and pick a data type for each (very much like
CREATE TABLE, but by filling a grid), and a datasheet view for entering rows. - Queries — three ways: a step-by-step Wizard, a drag-and-drop Design View, and — most interesting for this chapter — "Create Query in SQL View", where you type real SQL:
SELECT "EName", "Salary" FROM "EMPLOYEE" WHERE "Salary" > 40000;
(Base's embedded engine prefers double quotes around table/column names, but the SELECT–FROM–WHERE logic is exactly what you learned for MySQL.)
- Forms — point-and-click data-entry screens for your tables (something MySQL itself does not provide).
- Reports — formatted, printable summaries of your data.
Internally, Base stores your data using an embedded database engine (HSQLDB, or Firebird in newer versions) that lives inside the .odb file — no server to install or start.
The comparison
| Aspect | LibreOffice Base | MySQL |
|---|---|---|
| Kind of software | Desktop database application (front-end + embedded engine) | Client–server RDBMS (a database server) |
| Where data lives | One portable .odb file | Databases managed by the server on its host machine |
| Users | Essentially one user at a time | Many users/applications simultaneously, over a network |
| Access control | Minimal | Full user accounts and privileges (GRANT/REVOKE) |
| Interface | Graphical wizards + optional SQL view | SQL through the mysql command-line client or tools like MySQL Workbench |
| Forms & reports | Built in | Not built in (handled by separate applications) |
