How training load is monitored. Load is monitored by measuring both what the athlete does and how the body responds:
- External load — the objective work done: distance covered, number of repetitions and sets, weight lifted, speed and time.
- Internal load — the body's response to that work: heart rate (during and recovery), breathing rate, and the athlete's perceived exertion (how hard it feels), plus signs such as sleep quality, fatigue and appetite.
By tracking these, a coach can tell whether the load is right, too little, or too much, and can adjust it.
