A fully partitioned ventricle keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood completely separate, so the body always receives fully oxygenated blood — the key efficiency advantage of double circulation in birds and mammals.

Vertebrate hearts vary in their chamber count, and this directly affects how well oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are kept apart. In amphibians and reptiles (except crocodiles), the left atrium receives oxygenated blood while the right atrium receives deoxygenated blood, but both streams empty into a single ventricle, where they mix before being pumped out — described as incomplete double circulation.

In crocodiles, birds and mammals, by contrast, the ventricle is completely partitioned into two separate chambers by the inter-ventricular septum. Oxygenated blood entering the left atrium passes only into the left ventricle, and deoxygenated blood entering the right atrium passes only into the right ventricle, and the two ventricles then pump their contents out separately, without any mixing. …
