In the pins-and-string (gardener's) construction the two pins are the foci and the closed string forms triangle pin–pencil–pin, whose length is 2a+2c2a + 2c; the pin separation is 2c2c. With axes 66 cm and 44 cm: string =6+25= 6 + 2\sqrt{5} cm, pins 252\sqrt{5} cm apart.

In the classic construction, an endless (closed-loop) string is passed over two pins and a pencil keeps it taut while tracing the curve. The two pins sit at the foci F1,F2F_1, F_2 of the ellipse, and the pencil is the moving point PP.

1. Read off aa and bb. The axes are the major and minor axes:

2a=6⇒a=3 cm,2b=4⇒b=2 cm.2a = 6 \Rightarrow a = 3\text{ cm}, \qquad 2b = 4 \Rightarrow b = 2\text{ cm}.

2. Find cc (focal distance). For an ellipse, c2=a2−b2c^2 = a^2 - b^2:

c2=32−22=9−4=5  ⇒  c=5 cm.c^2 = 3^2 - 2^2 = 9 - 4 = 5 \;\Rightarrow\; c = \sqrt{5}\text{ cm}.

So the distance between the pins (foci) is F1F2=2c=25F_1F_2 = 2c = 2\sqrt{5} cm. …
