Debentures are redeemed by lump-sum payment on maturity, by instalments through draw of lots, by purchase in the open market, or by conversion into shares/new debentures.

Methods of redemption of debentures:

  1. Lump-sum on maturity: the whole amount is repaid on the fixed maturity date, usually after building a Debenture Redemption Reserve/sinking fund so that funds are available.
  2. Instalments (draw of lots): a fixed number of debentures are redeemed each year, the particular ones being selected by drawing lots, spreading the cash outflow over the period.
