Consumer protection is important for business because it ensures long-term survival, discharges social responsibility, avoids legal trouble and builds goodwill — serving the firm's own interest.

Consumer protection is often seen only as a duty towards consumers, but it is also important from the business's own point of view, for the following reasons:

  1. Long-term interest and survival of business — A business survives on its customers. Satisfying and protecting consumers ensures repeat purchases, loyalty and long-run survival and growth; cheating them drives them away.
  2. Business uses society's resources — A business uses resources that belong to society (consumers, workers, suppliers). It is therefore accountable to them and must protect their interests.
  3. Social responsibility — A business has a social responsibility towards various interest groups — owners, workers, government and, importantly, consumers — whose interests it must safeguard.
  4. Moral/ethical justification — Honest and fair dealing with consumers is a moral obligation; supplying safe, fairly priced, genuine goods is the ethical duty of business.
  5. Government intervention — If business exploits consumers, the government steps in with strict laws and penalties. By protecting consumers voluntarily, business avoids such intervention. …
