Maslow's theory ranks human needs in five ascending levels and says a person is motivated only by the lowest unsatisfied need.

Abraham Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory of motivation rests on two ideas: human needs are arranged in a priority order, and a satisfied need no longer motivates. The five levels, from lowest to highest, are:

  1. Basic (Physiological) needs — food, clothing, shelter; met through basic wages.
  2. Safety/Security needs — job security, stability, protection from danger; met through stable employment, pension, insurance.
  3. Social/Affiliation needs — belonging, friendship, acceptance; met through teams and good relations.
  4. Esteem needs — self-respect, recognition, status; met through praise, titles, promotion.
