Price is what a customer pays for a product; pricing aims at profit, sales/market-share growth, survival, meeting competition and image-building.

Meaning of Price: Price is the amount of money a customer has to pay to obtain a product or service. It is the exchange value of a product and is the only element of the marketing mix (the four P's) that brings in revenue — the other three (product, place, promotion) represent costs. Price strongly influences demand, sales volume and profit, and reflects the product's value and quality to the customer.

Objectives of Pricing:

  1. Profit maximisation / Target return — A common objective is to set prices that maximise profit or earn a desired (target) rate of return on investment.
  2. Achieving sales growth and market share — Pricing may aim to increase sales volume and capture a larger share of the market (e.g., through lower, competitive prices).
  3. Survival — In tough or highly competitive conditions, the objective may simply be to set prices that cover costs and keep the business running.
  4. Meeting/Facing competition — Prices may be fixed to match or counter competitors so as to retain customers.
  5. Product/Brand image — A high ('prestige') price may be used to build an image of superior quality, while reasonable pricing builds a value image. …
