Business management is the process of achieving business goals through planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling — and these are also the functions a manager performs.

Meaning of Business Management: Business management is the process of planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling the resources (men, money, materials, machines, methods) of a business enterprise so as to achieve its objectives effectively (doing the right things) and efficiently (at least cost). It coordinates all resources and efforts towards common goals.

Functions of a Manager: A manager performs the following interrelated functions:

  2. Organising — He identifies and divides the work, groups activities into departments, assigns duties with authority, and establishes reporting relationships, creating a structure.
  3. Staffing — He fills the positions with the right people — estimating manpower, recruiting, selecting, training, appraising and compensating employees.
  4. Directing — He leads, supervises, communicates with and motivates subordinates so that they work willingly and efficiently towards goals. …
