Taylor's principles of scientific management are: Science not rule of thumb, Harmony not discord, Cooperation not individualism, Development of each person — underpinned by a Mental Revolution.

F.W. Taylor, the Father of Scientific Management, gave the following principles:

  1. Science, not Rule of Thumb — Traditional rule-of-thumb and trial-and-error methods should be replaced by scientifically studied methods. For each job, management should determine, through investigation and standardisation, the 'one best way' of doing it.
  2. Harmony, not Discord — There should be complete harmony and mutual cooperation between management and workers, instead of conflict. Both must realise that each needs the other, and each should share in the gains. This requires a change of attitude — the 'mental revolution'.
  3. Cooperation, not Individualism — Competition should be replaced by cooperation. Management and workers should cooperate, share responsibilities, and work together; management should welcome workers' suggestions, and workers should refrain from unreasonable demands or restricting output.
  4. Development of Each and Every Person to his Greatest Efficiency and Prosperity — Workers should be scientifically selected and then trained and developed so that each reaches his highest level of efficiency, benefiting both himself and the organisation. …
